Shousetown built more than eighty steamboats and then vanished

Peter Shouse laid out a village on this stretch of the Ohio in the 1820s and launched his first steamboat, the Kentuckian, in 1829. The Porter brothers bought the yard in 1837 and kept going until more than eighty boats had gone down the river from here, including the Great Republic, one of the largest steamboats ever built. Hulls were framed at the yard and floated sixteen miles to Pittsburgh for engines and cabins. The village is called Glenwillard now and nothing of the boatyard is left.
