Point Defiance Park and the four hundred acres of old growth left inside a city

The Wilkes expedition named the headland for the judgment that guns placed here could defy any fleet trying to enter the Narrows. The federal government held the land as a military reserve and let Tacoma open it as a park in 1888. Its 760 acres carry a zoo, gardens, beaches, a ferry dock and roughly four hundred acres of old growth forest that was never logged, which is close to unheard of inside an American city.
