A Dutch-English trading estate of fifty-two thousand acres worked by twenty-three enslaved Africans, running a mill, a wharf and a landlord's business over hundreds of tenant farmers. The site is now interpreted from the point of view of the enslaved people rather than the family, which for a northern historic house was an unusual decision when it was taken.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
