The enslaved burial ground at Drake Park

Two colonial cemeteries sit across a path from one another here, one for the Hunt and Leggett families who farmed the peninsula and one, on a mound outside the consecrated ground, for the people they enslaved. The 1800 census counted 44 enslaved Africans living on Hunts Point. Teachers and pupils at nearby P.S. 48 established the burial ground's location from a 1910 photograph in 2014, and the city designated it a landmark in 2023.
