Ovilla starts as a fortified settlement and never grows
1844
Ovilla, Texas
James McNamara and his wife Joanna took a Peters Colony grant of 640 acres on upper Red Oak Creek in 1843, and the fortified settlement that formed around them the following year makes Ovilla the oldest town in Ellis County. It filled out around brush arbor meetings of a Cumberland Presbyterian congregation started in 1847. Fires in 1918 and 1926 destroyed most of the business district, and with both the railroads and the highways routed elsewhere it never built back.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
