Milwaukee Junction, where the Detroit car industry actually started
1900
Detroit, Michigan
Two railroads crossed here, which is why the earliest car firms put their shops in this pocket of land rather than anywhere else in Detroit. Ford, Cadillac, Packard, Dodge, Fisher Body and Studebaker all worked out of buildings inside a few blocks of the junction before any of them was large. Historians call it the cradle of the industry, and a good deal of the brickwork is still standing.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
