Old Westbury Gardens, a Gold Coast estate that survived
1959
Old Westbury, New York

John Shaffer Phipps, heir to a Carnegie steel fortune, built Westbury House and its formal gardens on this ground at the start of the twentieth century. Most of the Long Island estates of that generation were broken up for housing tracts after the war, taxes and staff costs having made them impossible. This one opened to the public as a museum in 1959 and still has its walled garden, its allees and its lake.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
