Ocmulgee and the earth lodge floor

Mississippian people raised platform mounds above the Ocmulgee and built a council chamber with a clay floor moulded into a bird-shaped platform and forty-seven seats. That floor is original and dates to about 1015, which makes it one of the few places in the country where you can stand on a surface Native people shaped a thousand years ago. The 1930s dig here employed 800 men and was among the largest ever undertaken in America.
