Oakmont and Johnny Miller's 63
1973
Oakmont, Pennsylvania
Henry Clay Fownes laid out this course in 1903 and built it to punish, most famously with the church pews, a long bunker ridged with grass rows between the third and fourth fairways. On the last day of the 1973 U.S. Open, Johnny Miller started six shots back and shot 63, hitting all eighteen greens and taking 29 putts, the lowest final round anyone had ever posted in the championship. He won by one. Oakmont has now held ten U.S. Opens, more than any other course, the most recent in 2025.
