A. W. Tillinghast laid out the Black as the hardest of five courses in a New Deal park project pushed through by Robert Moses, and it opened in 1936 as a state course anyone could book for a fee. In 2002 it became the first publicly owned and operated course in the country to host the US Open, won by Tiger Woods, the only man under par that week. It has since taken a second Open in 2009, the PGA Championship in 2019 and the Ryder Cup in 2025.
