Jack Nicklaus won his first PGA Championship at the Dallas Athletic Club, in a trophy too hot to hold
1963
Dallas, Texas
The Dallas Athletic Club had only been out here since 1954, when freeway building pushed it off its downtown corner and it bought 317 acres near the Mesquite line. In July 1963 its Blue Course hosted the PGA Championship in temperatures over 100 degrees, and three players withdrew rather than keep going. Nicklaus came from three back on the final day and won by two over Dave Ragan, the first of his five PGA titles. At the presentation the Wanamaker Trophy had been sitting in the sun long enough that he had to pick it up with a towel.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
