Sandy Ground, a free Black settlement of oystermen
1828
Rossville, Staten Island
A free Black ferryman bought land here in 1828, the year after New York abolished slavery, and became the first Black landowner on the island. Oystermen from Maryland, Delaware and Virginia followed him to work the beds in Raritan Bay, and by the 1890s the settlement held about two hundred people. It is the oldest continuously inhabited free Black settlement in the country.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
