North Hollywood High School and the magnet program that meets inside the zoo

The school opened in 1927 as Lankershim High School, named for the wheat family whose subdivision became the town, with 800 students and a first graduating class in 1928. In 1981 it added a biological sciences magnet that does not meet on campus at all: those students ride a shuttle to classrooms on the grounds of the Los Angeles Zoo in Griffith Park and work alongside keepers. Only a handful of American high schools run a program inside a working zoo. The main campus still enrols about 2,500 students from North Hollywood, Valley Village, Studio City and Sun Valley.
