The college began in 1927 as Glendale Junior College, borrowing classrooms inside Glendale Union High School at Broadway and Verdugo. Enrolment more than tripled in two years. Voters passed a building bond in October 1935 by better than four to one, and matching Works Progress Administration money paid for a 59 acre campus on North Verdugo Road that opened in 1937 at a total cost of about $390,000.
