Sandy Island, reached only by boat
1865
Georgetown County, South Carolina
Freed people bought land on this island after the war and their descendants still hold it, one of the largest Gullah Geechee communities left, with no bridge to the mainland. Children ride a boat to school. Residents turned down a bridge in the 1990s on the correct reading that it would bring developers, and much of the island is now under conservation easement instead.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
