Newark manufacturers wanted trained technicians and pushed the state to charter a technical school in February 1881. It opened in 1885 with 88 students, backed by industrialists including Edward Weston, whose Newark works built the electrical measuring instruments the trade ran on. The school became the Newark College of Engineering and then NJIT, and it counts roughly one in four of New Jersey's professional engineers among its alumni.
