Brooklyn Tech and the exam that fills it
1922
29 Fort Greene Place, Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Albert Colston argued Brooklyn needed a high school that taught engineering to boys headed for the shops, and the board agreed in 1922. The twelve storey building on Fort Greene Place went up in 1932 for six million dollars and covers most of a block, with foundry and aeronautics floors inside. Admission has always turned on a single test, which has made the school both a ladder and a running argument about who gets on it. Two of its graduates went on to Nobel prizes.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
