New Utrecht Reformed Church and its liberty pole
1828
18th Avenue, Bensonhurst, Brooklyn
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
The congregation was formed in 1677 by Dutch residents of the town of New Utrecht, a few years after the English took New Netherland, and the burial ground was consecrated in 1654. The present church was built in 1828 from stones taken out of the 1700 building, under the Army engineer Rene De Russy, who was then building Fort Hamilton. The liberty pole outside is the sixth on the spot. The first went up in 1783 to needle the British troops on their way out.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
