Fort Hamilton guards the Narrows
1831
Bay Ridge, Brooklyn
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A small American battery on this point fired on HMS Asia on July 4, 1776 as the British fleet came through the Narrows, to no great effect. The masonry fort was finished in 1831, and in 1839 the state's 27th Regiment was allowed to drill here, which made it the country's first National Guard training camp. Robert E. Lee was post engineer from 1841 to 1846, Thomas Jackson served from 1848 to 1850, and Abner Doubleday took command in 1861 straight from Fort Sumter.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
