Nathan Barnert gives Paterson a hospital

Nathan Barnert made his money in Paterson, served as its mayor, and spent much of the rest of his life handing it back to the city. In 1914 he donated the site at East 30th Street and Broadway and endowed the hospital that carried his name. Fred Wesley Wentworth designed the first building in pink granite and yellow brick, and it stood until the mid 1960s when a modern block replaced it. The hospital ran for ninety nine years before it closed.
