Nassau County splits off and Mineola becomes its seat
1899

When the western towns of Queens County voted themselves into Greater New York in 1898, the three eastern towns were left outside the city with a county government that no longer had a home. They were organised as Nassau County on the first day of 1899 and the seat was put at Mineola, a railroad village that had grown up where the Hempstead branch left the main line. The county offices actually sit just over the boundary in Garden City while still carrying a Mineola address, which has confused mail for a century.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
