NASA opens a Cambridge lab, then closes the only centre it has ever closed

NASA put its Electronics Research Center across the street from MIT in 1964, to build in-house expertise instead of buying all of it from contractors. It also ran the agency's New England contracts and grants until budget cuts shut it in 1970, the only NASA centre ever closed outright. The Department of Transportation took over the campus for its Volpe Center and stayed until 2023.
