Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA's first
1959
Greenbelt, Maryland
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
NASA opened its first space flight centre here on 1 May 1959, on farmland northeast of Washington, and named it for the rocket pioneer Robert Goddard. Around ten thousand civil servants and contractors work on the campus. Hubble, the COBE mission that mapped the cosmic microwave background and the Solar Dynamics Observatory have all been run out of a Maryland suburb.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
