El Segundo builds Syncom, the first satellite to hold a fixed spot over Earth
1963
El Segundo, California
The Space and Communications division of Hughes Aircraft, based in El Segundo, built the Syncom satellites for NASA. Syncom 2 launched on 26 July 1963 and became the first communications satellite to hold a geosynchronous orbit, and that August President Kennedy used it to telephone the Nigerian prime minister Abubakar Balewa. The plant passed to Boeing and still turns out commercial and military satellites on the same ground.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
