Mount Elliott Tool and Die, the Briggs body plant that still makes the dies
1938
Detroit, Michigan
Briggs Manufacturing built this plant on East Outer Drive in 1938, when Briggs was the largest independent maker of automobile bodies in the world and supplied Ford, Chrysler and several European firms. Chrysler took it over in the 1950s and ran it as Outer Drive Stamping. It still turns out the stamping dies and checking fixtures that other plants use to press sheet metal, now under Stellantis.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
