Mound Road Engine and the longest assembly line in the world
1955
Detroit, Michigan
Chrysler acquired this plant in 1953 as part of its purchase of Briggs Manufacturing, used it briefly for aircraft components, and transferred it to the Plymouth division in 1954. Plymouth added 71,000 square feet, taking the plant past 539,000, and when engine production began in 1955 it housed what was then the longest assembly line anywhere. It turned out Chrysler small block V8s for decades. DaimlerChrysler closed it in 2002 and shifted the work to the Mack Avenue engine complex.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
