Seven Mile Island and the shoals people fished for millennia

For thirty miles the Tennessee ran shallow and broken over rock, which concentrated fish and mussels and made this one of the most densely occupied stretches of river in the Southeast. People camped on and around this island through the Archaic, Woodland and Mississippian periods, leaving shell mounds metres deep. The dams that later made the valley famous drowned most of the shoals and much of the record with them.
