A fifty-foot hill of oyster shells the Timucua piled up over centuries of good dinners, the tallest shell midden on the U.S. Mainland. It is visible from miles out in the Atlantic and appeared on Spanish charts in the 1500s as a navigation mark. A boardwalk climbs it now. Underfoot, the whole hill crunches.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
