Central Brooklyn had no four year public college until residents spent years demanding one, and the City University chartered this campus in July 1970 in a 1908 school building on Carroll Street. Students occupied the president's office for most of the spring of 1982 until he resigned. It remains one of the few predominantly Black senior colleges in the northern states.
