The Jefferson Bank protest
1963
Jefferson Avenue at Washington, St. Louis
CORE asked a bank on Jefferson Avenue to hire Black clerical staff, the bank refused, and the demonstrations that followed ran for months and put organisers in jail, including a young William Clay who went on to Congress. It is generally treated as the turning point where the city's civil rights movement stopped asking politely. Percy Green, who later climbed the half built Arch to make the same point about construction jobs, came out of it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
