Calvary Cemetery, three million burials

The trustees of Old St. Patrick's on Mott Street bought 71 acres of Newtown farmland in 1845 because their Manhattan burial ground was nearly full, and cholera and the Rural Cemetery Act of 1847 pushed the city's dead out to Queens. The first burial was in July 1848. By 1852 there were fifty burials a day, half of them poor Irish children under seven, and mourners came over by ferry from 23rd Street. About three million people are buried across the 365 acres now, more interments than any other cemetery in the United States.
