The Tacoma Housing Authority took a federal commission in 1942 to throw up two thousand units for shipyard workers on the city's east side, and the first families moved in on 1 May 1943. The buildings were designed for about a decade of use. They were converted to low income rentals after the war and stayed in service close to sixty years with no renovation before a federal grant in 2001 paid to demolish and rebuild the whole neighbourhood.
