Montauk Point Light

Montauk, New York

Washington ordered a lighthouse for the end of the island, and it was built far enough back from the edge that it was expected to last two hundred years before the sea reached it. The sea nearly did, the bluff eroded to within feet, and a schoolgirl's terracing project, taken up and enlarged, is part of what holds the ground under it now. It is the oldest lighthouse in New York.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
