West Quoddy Head, first light in America
1808
Lubec, Maine
Rapidfire · CC BY-SA 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons
The candy-striped lighthouse at the easternmost point of the continental United States, where the sunrise reaches the country first for much of the year. The light has run since 1808, guarding the Quoddy Narrows fog in a place that averages more of it than almost anywhere on the coast. The parking lot fills before dawn on January 1 with people who want the year's first American sunrise, which is exactly the kind of thing Maine respects.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
