St. Augustine Light, and the tower the ocean took
1874
Anastasia Island, St. Augustine, Florida

Spanish and British crews kept watchtowers and beacons on this end of Anastasia Island from 1565, and the American territorial government lit Florida's first lighthouse here in 1824. Erosion was eating the site, so a taller brick tower went up further inland between 1871 and 1874. The old coquina tower fell into the sea in 1880. The replacement still turns its original first order Fresnel lens.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
