George Washington Carver High School served Black students from four towns

Classes for Black children began in 1921 in a Baptist church, the school took Carver's name by 1940, and it was accredited as a four year high school in 1941. La Porte and several of the towns around it had no Black high school at all, so their students came here, among them Gene Washington, later a receiver for the Minnesota Vikings. A larger campus opened on this site in 1948. The school closed after the 1966 to 1967 year when the district desegregated, and the buildings were demolished in 2002 after a buried oil storage pit was found under the grounds.
