Gordon Manor, the Black suburb taken by eminent domain

In 1925 the Black developer Wilbur Gordon assembled 213 acres of open ground here and platted Gordon Manor, about a thousand lots with a clubhouse and a streetcar line, sold as an upscale address at a time when nearly every subdivision in the South Bay was closed to Black buyers by deed. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors declared eminent domain and took the land in 1926, and the neighbourhood was never built. The acreage became Alondra Park, its ten-acre lake, the county golf course, and in 1947 El Camino College.
