On 7 February 2008 Charles Lee Thornton shot a police officer outside Kirkwood City Hall, took the officer's handgun and walked into a council meeting already in session. He killed a second officer, the public works director and two council members, and shot Mayor Mike Swoboda, who died of his injuries seven months later. Thornton had spent years in public dispute with the city over his Meacham Park contracting business.
