Louisiana seizes Jackson Barracks before it votes to secede

The Army built this post at the parish line below the city in 1834, and it was renamed for Andrew Jackson in 1866. In January 1861, before the state convention had voted on secession, Louisiana troops took the barracks in the name of the state. Union forces retook it in 1862 and held it for the rest of the war. It is now the headquarters of the Louisiana National Guard, which had to rebuild after the Industrial Canal breach flooded it in 2005.
