Arabi starts as Stockyard Landing when New Orleans bans slaughterhouses

The stockyards and slaughterhouses below the city wanted out from under New Orleans authority, and in 1875 their owners persuaded the state to hand the land downriver of Jackson Barracks to St. Bernard Parish. The settlement was known as Stockyard Landing, and an 1851 map had called it Jacksonburgh. The Arabi name came later, after residents burned the parish courthouse in the 1890s, when a Federal Writers' Project account says the Egyptian revolt led by Arabi Pasha was much in the news.
