Boonville, the first battle in Missouri
1861
Boonville, Missouri
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A brief, almost bloodless fight, perhaps twenty minutes, in which Lyon's Union force scattered the pro-secession state militia. Its size was trivial and its effect was not: it gave the Union the Missouri River, kept the state's arsenals and rail in federal hands, and set off four years of guerrilla war in the counties instead.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
