Little India grows around the 74th Street subway crossroads

Two subway lines meet at the triangle of 74th Street, Broadway and Roosevelt Avenue, the elevated Flushing line running above and the Queens Boulevard line below. South Asian immigrants who arrived after the 1965 immigration act settled around that transfer point, and the blocks of 74th Street north of Roosevelt Avenue filled with sari shops, jewellers and sweet shops. The city gave the strip the official name Little India in 1992, and 74th Street later took the honorary name Kalpana Chawla Way for the astronaut lost aboard Columbia.
