Astoria's Muslim population grew from the mid 1970s, at first from Lebanon and later from Egypt, Yemen, Syria, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Kosovo, Albania, Bosnia and Montenegro. Through the 1990s the stretch of Steinway Street between 28th Avenue and Astoria Boulevard filled with Arabic shops, restaurants and cafes and picked up the unofficial name Little Egypt. It runs a few blocks from the Greek tavernas that had been the neighbourhood's signature since the 1960s.
