Astoria's Greek Town
1974
Astoria, Queens
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
Greek arrivals rose sharply through the 1960s and a Greek Town had formed in Astoria by the end of the decade, followed after 1974 by Cypriots. The Greek population of the neighbourhood was 22,579 in 1980 and had fallen to 18,127 by 1990 as immigration slowed and birth rates dropped. Economic trouble in Greece in the 2010s brought a fresh wave. The bakeries, tavernas and Orthodox churches stayed through all of it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
