South Lawndale was a Czech and Polish district until Mexican families moving west out of Pilsen filled it in through the 1960s and 70s. More than eight in ten residents are now of Mexican descent, and the community area holds the largest Mexican born population in the city. Two Vietnam veterans, Ronald Baltierra and David Ramirez, raised the arch over 26th Street in 1990 to a design by the Mexican architect Adrian Lozano, and in 1991 the president of Mexico came to the neighbourhood and left a bronze clock for it.
