East St. Louis opened Lincoln in 1909 as the high school for the city's Black students, and it held that role through the whole segregation era. Miles Davis enrolled in 1941, played in the marching band and entered music competitions here, and graduated in 1944 before leaving for Juilliard. Lincoln was consolidated into East St. Louis Senior High in 1998.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
