Englewood fights school segregation in the North

Englewood's elementary schools followed its wards, which meant the Fourth Ward's Lincoln School was almost entirely Black and the new Quarles School in the wealthier First Ward was almost entirely white. When the board refused to transfer nine Lincoln pupils in February 1962, demonstrators occupied the council chamber overnight in what is often called the first sit-in in the North. Two thirds of Lincoln's pupils stayed home in a boycott that September. On July 2, 1963 the state education commissioner ordered the district to break up the concentration at Lincoln, and the school was closed and its pupils spread across the city.
