Lewis University, founded to teach trades and flying
1932
Romeoville, Illinois
The school opened in Romeoville in 1932 as a technical institute for boys, teaching the building trades alongside the then novel subject of aviation. It was renamed for Frank J. Lewis, the Chicago businessman who paid for it, in 1934, and the De La Salle Christian Brothers took over its direction after the war. It enrols around seven thousand students now and still trains pilots on the airfield next door.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
