Lewis University Airport, a Catholic school's own airfield off Route 66
1939
Romeoville, Illinois
The Lewis school in Romeoville was teaching aviation from the early 1930s and completed its own airport in 1939, beside the Route 66 alignment running southwest out of Chicago. The Joliet Regional Port District took ownership in 1989. The National Weather Service forecast office for Chicago sits next to the runways, which is why every Chicago area forecast and tornado warning is issued from Romeoville rather than the city.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
