Camp Harahan staged a quarter million troops for the war
1942
Harahan, Louisiana
Also called Camp Plauche, this was the staging area for troops moving through the New Orleans Port of Embarkation, and it turned into a training base in 1942. Somewhere between 200,000 and 300,000 soldiers were organised and trained here, among them railway battalions, port units and hospital men. The Transportation Corps Officer Candidate School moved to the camp after being founded in 1942.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
